Where to start when switching to organic

Ben Kendall 2012-04-16

Finding it hard to fill your grocery bags with organic products? The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation has identified five of the worst environmental nasties.

Coffee: some of the most dangerous pesticides, ones that for a long-time have been banned in Sweden and Europe, are used on coffee plantations. The pesticides used are detrimental for nature and animals, including humans. Organic coffee is readily available and it will only cost you a few extra kronor.

Bananas and grapes (including wine and raisins): both are heavily sprayed. On banana plantations extremely hazardous pesticides are used that can cause nerve damage to both workers and their children. As for grapes their thin skins can contain the residue of pesticides. For example, the residue of 26 pesticides was found in a European sample of raisins.

Dairy products: for a few extra kronor you can get dairy products that make a big difference both here and abroad. In Sweden you contribute to healthier water, less poisons and better conditions for the animals. In countries such as Brazil, it reduces the need for deforestation and that animals and humans are poisoned in order to produce cheap food for cattle in Sweden.

Meat: it is best to choose organic for the same reasons as the dairy products. If there is no organic option, choose free range. The most important thing is to reduce your consumption of meat, writes the Society for Nature Conservation.

Potatoes: the humble potato is the most sprayed crop in Sweden. The worst of them all is the King Edward variety.

# In Sweden, organic products can be identified by the KRAV symbol
