We all know the Swedes love their "fika". But did you know there's even a day dedicated to celebrate the Swedes' ultimate fika snack, the cinnamon bun? Well, today is the official cinnamon bun day in Sweden.
The day was initiated in 1999 by Hembakningsrådet (the "Homebaking Council"). In addition to a couple of more fika breaks than usual, the day will be acknowledged at for example Gothenburg's Röhsska Museum. The museum will host workshops, a seminar and fairytale readings, all in the name of the cinnamon bun.
The fika breaks are a daily routine at many workplaces in Sweden. The cinnamon bun itself may not be the healthiest snack, but the break is a good way to balance your workday according to the physician Urban Svensson, who works for the health company Previa.
He tells GP that he thinks we should skip the unhealthy snacks but make sure to take a pause from work, preferably both before and after lunch. If we allow ourselves to take a break it will be easier to perform all through the day. It is also a chance to get to know our colleagues, which gives a better social environment to work in.
- It is common that people, maybe in order to have time to do all their work, skip the break, but that actually makes you less productive. The pause is a way to structure your workday, says Urban Svensson to GP.
