New record price for Swedish lobsters

Linda Genborg 2011-09-27

This year's lobster season started on Monday and the first lobsters were sold on Gothenburg's fish market this morning. The price: over 31,000 kronor per kilo.

Last year the first box went for 7,300 kronor per kilo, which was the previous record.

- Someone paid 31,600 kronor per kilo for the first box, reported GP's journalist Peo Stärnered on Tuesday morning.

The buyer was the wholesaler Hanssons Fisk in Gothenburg. The lobsters will be sold in two stores in Gothenburg and one in Stockholm.

Why are the first lobsters so expensive?

- It's a fantastic product from the sea, and the supply is smaller this year, said Henrik Svenberg, chairman of the Swedish Fishermen Federation, to GP.
