Shrove Tuesday: day of the cream bun

Linda Genborg 2012-02-21

Today is Fettisdagen (Shrove Tuesday), the biggest semla eating day of the year. You have probably noticed the cardamom cream buns filled with almond paste that appeared in bakeries and cafes soon after Christmas. These are called semlor and were traditionally eaten only on the Fettisdagen, which marked the start of the fast leading up to Easter.

However, these days the semlor go on sale in early January and are available in the shops until Easter. It is estimated that around two million semlor are eaten in Gothenburg during this period. If you have not yet tried these creamy delights, we recommend you give it a go.

Göteborgs-Posten does a test each year to find the best semlor in and around Gothenburg. This year the best semla was found in Partille, at Cederleüfs & Svenheimers bageri och konditori in the shopping centre Allum. "The Rolls Royce of semlor" said one member of the test panel. "This was made by someone who likes their job" was another comment. The semla scored 5 out of 5 points.

In Gothenburg, the best semlor were found at Jerkstrands konditori in Nordstan and at Ica Focus in Gårda. Both received four out of five from the test panel. "Heavenly almond paste" and "Unexpectedly good" were two of the comments.

The semlor from Steinbrenner & Nyberg at Kungsmässan in Kungsbacka, David bagare at Frölunda Torg, Dahls outside Coop Forum in Bäckebol and Willys in Kållered all did alright in the test and received ratings of 3 out 5.

In shared last place, with 2 out 5, came the semlor from Brogatans konditori och smörgåstårtor in Mölndals centrum and last year's winner Aleks konditori at Amhults torg in Torslanda.
