Jesper Tullback pouring the winning cup
Some of Gothenburg's best baristas gathered for the city's first ever Thursday Night Throwdown - a latte art competition - at Jup's Coffee on Thursday evening.
Behind the competition is Reggie Elliot, an American barista now living in Gothenburg. He says one of the main aims is to strengthen the local coffee community.
- There are a lot of really cool coffee shops and a lot of great baristas [in Gothenburg], but everyone does their own thing. In DC and other areas I've been, all the baristas hang out together, boost each other up, encourage each other and challenge each other. What happens is the whole scene benefits. I thought it would be nice to do the same here.
On Thursday, about half of the around 30 strong crowd took part in the "barista jam". The likes of Da Matteo, Bar Italia, Mahogony, Jup's Coffee, Espresso House and Kaffemaskinen were represented.
Each barista had three minutes to produce two cups of coffee. These were judged on things such as pattern symmetry and definition, use of space and overall impression.
But it is not about who wins (it was won by Jesper Tullback from the store Kaffemaskinen), it is about the coffee community getting together, having fun and learning from each other, says Reggie.
The aim is to hold Thursday Night Throwdowns on a regular basis, about once a month, at different venues in Gothenburg.
