The Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket) is starting a development centre in Gothenburg. The aim is to gather all activities in the city.
- We want to make Gothenburg the hub for our activites, says Ann-Catrine Zetterdahl, Director General for the Maritime Administration. In Gothenburg we have a base that we can build from.
The ambition is to make Gothenburg the centre for research and development, and the base for future innovation work. Sea saftey, the environment and a more efficient shipping industry are three areas that will be prioritised. Chalmers University, the research institute Lighthouse and the Port of Gothenburg are some of the Maritime Administration's collaboration partners.
The Maritime Administration have started looking for permises in Gothenburg, but there is no timeline for when the new activities will start.
- We have started the process. The sooner the better, says Ann-Catrine Zetterdahl
The decision to focus on Gothenburg is a big turnaround. As late as in May last year, the Maritime Administration decided to cut back on its activities here. The board of the Port of Gothenburg are very pleased that the Maritime Administration changed its plans.
- The largest port in Scandinavia has to have these types of facilities. It is natural that they should be here, says Magnus Kårestedt, CEO of the Port of Gothenburg, to GP.
