Former Prime Minister of Sweden, Ingvar Carlsson, will be in charge of a new Life Science coordination project in Västra Götaland. This was announced in a newsletter from the West Swedish Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The region wants to strengthen its conditions for life science research; partly as a result of that Astra Zeneca is concentrating its cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and respiratory and inflammation therapy areas to its Mölndal facilities.
The Life Science coordination project will work to encourage collaboration between the business sector, the academic world and the public sector. The University of Gothenburg, Chalmers, the City of Gothenburg, the City of Mölndal and the West Sweden Chamber of Commerce and Industry are participating in the project.
The aim is to establish what measures need to be taken in order to make sure that Astra Zeneca and other life science companies will succeed and remain in the region.
Ingvar Carlsson will also work to make the region more attractive. He participated in the decision process for the bridge between Malmö and Copenhagen and has seen the positive effects. He believes Gothenburg has great potential as well.
- But the region has to improve in some areas, infrastructure is one example. The West Sweden Chamber of Commerce and Industry can be a very important driving force and show politicians and decision-makers, both here and nationwide, that things must happen. Gothenburg should be the hub in West Sweden, and in that case Gothenburg must have class, says Ingvar Carlsson in the newsletter (cited in GP). Ingvar Carlsson was the Prime Minister of Sweden from 1986 - 1991, and 1994 - 1996. He was the leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party from 1986 - 1996.
