On Valentine's Day, February 14, begins a large heart study at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. 1,000 Gothenburgers between the age of 50 and 65 will participate.
Behind the pilot study is the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, the University of Gothenburg and the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation. It aims to identify the individual risk of heart attack, sudden cardiac arrest and other heart diseases.
"Every year we will keep an eye on how things are going for the participants. For example, if someone suffers a heart attack, we try to analyse why using their previous test results," says Göran Bergström who is in charge of the pilot study in Gothenburg, to Göteborgs-Posten.
Following the pilot study in Gothenburg a large-scale national study is scheduled. It will involve 30,000 Swedes aged 50-64 years.
"If the large-scale study is carried out it will be the largest in the world. It provides fantastic opportunities for future research that we hope will lead to better prevention and treatment of heart, lung and vascular diseases," says Göran Bergström in a statement.
