Mauritz Kaffe to serve its last coffee

Ben Kendall 2012-01-16

Gothenburg's oldest coffee bar Mauritz Kaffe will serve its last cup of coffee from the Fredsgatan premise on September 30. The landlord Hufvudstaden plans to more than double the cafe's rent.

Mauritz Kaffe was founded in 1888 and has been in the Fredsgatan premise in central Gothenburg since 1976. With the upcoming rent hike owner Tord Wetter says it is economically impossible to remain in the premise on Fredsgatan.

- No way. We can not pay the money, the rents, he told SR.

The owner of the Fredsgatan building Hufvudstaden says that the current rental agreement is not at market value.

The news of a probable closure of the Fredsgatan coffee bar has seen Gothenburgers show their support. Over 4,300 people have joined the Facebook group Rädda Mauritz Kaffe.

Mauritz Kaffe may live on. Tord Wetter says he is on the lookout for a new premise.
