Gothenburg's infrastructure project Västsvenska Paketet, with new roads, tunnel and bridge, will create jobs in the region for the next 15 years. The projects will require around 1,000 people per year.
The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has presented a prognosis for 2012 to 2027 that in total includes 16,900 yearly workers or around 1,000 jobs a year. This year the job openings are estimated to around 800, whereof 200 jobs are for projection (technicians, architects and geologists) and 600 jobs are within contract work (construction, concrete and cement).
The demand will be the highest in 2017 with close to 1,400 jobs.
Carl Bartler, the City of Gothenburg's coordinator for Västsvenska paketet says to GP that many contractors in West Sweden have showed interest in the jobs. It is also possible that a foreign contractor will win the contract.
When asked how to avoid wage dumping Carl Bartler said:
"We all have the same interests, purchasers and the contractors; that it should be fair and that we should follow the rules in place."
The City of Gothenburg is visiting the on-going Job Fair at Svenska Mässan (Feb 21-22).
"The aim with visiting the fair is to show that there will be jobs for a long period of time," says Carl Bartler to GP.
