Everything in the student apartment in Guldheden where the fire started on February 4 is completely burnt-out. Except for the small hallway. It's close to undamaged, and this is where the dead man was found.
The police wonder why the 27-year-old man wasn't able to get himself to safety. The firemen discovered the man as soon as they entered the small studio apartment. The man was not badly burnt and did not have any other visible injuries, reports Göteborgs-Posten.
The cause of fire is still not known. It is not known if it started in furniture or in the small pantry.
Most point to that the man died after breathing in toxic smoke from the fire. This can for example happen if the person is sleeping and slips into deep unconsciousness due to the smoke.
But if the young man in the student apartment was sleeping when the fire started it is likely he would have been laying in his bed or sofa, not in the hallway.
"It's a difficult case," says police investigator Anders Lycke to Göteborgs-Posten.
He says that one possible scenario is that the fire was very violent from the outset, which would have generated lots of smoke.
The police are still waiting for answers from the forensic investigation, as well as the final results from the post-mortem exam.
