Train company SJ is ending its Gothenburg-Malmö services as of April 10.
"The background for this change is that we have long struggled with a lack of profitability on the route. The total supply of rail traffic is now greater than demand," says Jan Olson, manager for business developmeent at SJ, in a statement.
Öresundståg, owned by French company Veolia and contracted by regional transportation companies including Västtrafik, has trains between Gothenburg-Malmö leaving about once an hour. They go via Helsingborg and stop at all small cities in Halland in Skåne.
Västtrafik's CEO Lars Backström told Göteborgs-Posten that there are plans to increase the services, but not until the autumn. So in the short-term Öresundståg trains may get very crowded.
Lars Backström also told the newspaper that he was "very surprised" by SJ's decision. Regional transportation companies in Västra Götaland, Halland and Skåne will have to quickly investigate the implications of SJ's cancellation.
