Teater Trixter - November 16. Who hasn't been through a love story that ended up badly and left deep marks? Tom and Amy are two of those people who still haven't gotten over their first love and yet they end up trapped in a relationship. None of them wants it, but a few drinks one evening after work turn them into something more than simply co-workers. Amy's big love got a tattoo with her name when they broke up and Tom's mind is still with his high school sweetheart.
"If you haven't met someone by the time you graduate, you're going to marry some idiot from your work. It's that simple," Tom thinks. Amy and Tom's relationship is indirectly influenced by Sasha, a female colleague who apparently is more involved than she would have thought. An unexpected event occurs and changes Tom's and Amy's perspectives on their relationship, which until then was only the result of convenience and social pressure.
The play is not only humorous but also incredibly true and actual. Most of you will laugh out loud while seeing it and think at the same time oh, God, that is so true! As a viewer it is impossible not to recognize pieces of yourself in the complicated and yet so common story of teenage love, broken hearts and desperate dating after the age of thirty. Dean Ashton, Kristina Brändén Whitaker and Emily Aston have truly managed to take the story out of the ordinary by brilliant acting and sharp humour. The play is filled with typical love-related issues such as failed relationships, bad break ups, parents' worries that their children will end up alone, the thought that one can do better, the sad truth that all the good ones are taken etc. Still, even though nothing is completely terrible, loneliness and hopelessness hit back and the thought what the hell am I doing? forces young people to grow up and have a different perspective on romantic relationships.
Gothenburg English Speaking Theatre (GEST) has proven once again its high standards and offered the audience another astonishing performance. My romantic history premiered on November 16 and will run until December 6 at Teater Trixter.
