Parts of the Mathematics Centre at Chalmers will be transformed into 106 new student apartments. They will be available in autumn 2013.
SGS Studentbostäder, which is building new apartments for the first time in five years, will take over about one third of the Mathematics Centre. They will also build an additional two levels on top of the building.
Construction will start in February next year and should be complete come autumn 2013. In total there will be 70 one-room apartments, 10 two-room and 13 three-room apartments. There will also be 13 short-term rental apartments and a pre-school.
Mats Odersjö, CEO at SGS Studentbostäder, told GP that the new apartments are an important step to reducing the housing shortage among students. But he says that many more are needed, around 1,000 now and about 4,000 by 2020.
- It would be best to build a large area. We are discussing with Göteborgs Stad a large project that we call campus Linné. At Medicinareberget there may be space for 1,000 apartments, said Mats Odersjö to GP.
He also hopes to have new student apartments at for example near Näckrosdammen, in Östra Kålltorp, Sandarna and in Johanneberg. But these probably won't be available before 2014.
