2000 new bachelor students were welcomed to Chalmers University at Götaplatsen today. It is the Chalmers Student Union that welcomes their new members with speeches, music and dancing and more. The university is somewhat infamous for its freshman pranks.
- What will happen next is a secret. It's exciting and bit scary. But mostly just fun, says Stina Månsson to GP. She has moved to Gothenburg from Ånge to study at Chalmers.
Agnes Söderlund from Hässleholm stands next to Stina, and the two girls belong to the same section in the student union. Dressed in a green and black paper crown each, they listen to the instructions from their new union buddies.
- I haven't even had time to get used to the fact that I will start studying. I'm sure there will be lots of hard work, but right now it just feels like fun, says Agnes.
Emilia Liljeström is the chairman of Chalmers' Student Union and has worked hard to organise the welcoming. She says:
- We are almost 2000 people involved to take care of the same number of students. It's fantastic.
- It's a day to meet and get to know each other. It's very important that all the new students know that they're not alone.
Chalmers will welcome its new exchange students and Master's students next week.
