Chalmers will no longer take in doctoral students on scholarships, except for in special cases. Instead, the PhD students will be employed with the benefits of sick and parental leave, as well as unemployment insurance.
- The basic principle is that the doctoral students will be employed with regulated wages and holidays and be full members of their research environment, says Alf-Erik Almstedt, vice president responsible for Chalmers licentiate and doctoral programs.
He continues:
- I hope and believe that we are becoming more attractive for doctoral students as we offer good conditions. Doctoral students are very important to us - with guidance from our researchers they perform a majority of the practical research work and about 20 percent of their time is spent teaching, which is important both for Chalmers' education and for the pedagogical development of the PhD students.
Some very limited exceptions to the rule of employment for doctoral students will remain. These concern contractual partnerships in which a double degree is possible, scholarship programs for graduate students from countries with no ability to pay, and strategic partnerships for Chalmers. For these students, Chalmers will continue to take out separate insurance so that they are provided with comparable conditions to the employed doctoral students.
