Doctoral students at the University of Gothenburg (GU) will be employed from the first day of their studies, according to a new decision from the university's board of directors.
- The doctoral employment is an important reform and something that the board has discussed for several years. It feels very good that we have made it happen, says principal of GU Pam Fredman in a press release.
The current funding arrangements for students will be phased out and replaced by employment. The change will be introduced gradually starting in January 2013 and will be fully implemented by July 2015.
The university says the change will provide improved conditions for doctoral students, more transparency and greater consistency within the university. It will also improve GU's competitiveness when it comes to attracting PhD candidates.
