Mission possible. University students from West Sweden will get the opportunity to travel all over the world this summer in search of "the best ideas in the world". It is the West Sweden Chamber of Commerce and Industry that is behind the project. The aim is to bring forward talented students from the region's universities and to gain international perspectives on the development possibilities for West Sweden.
The competing students in the Mission possible project come from universities in West Sweden including the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers and University West in Trollhättan. The winning team from the University of Gothenburg was elected on Monday. Jenny Hulthén and Ivar Huntington will travel to Detroit in the US and San Bernando in Brazil this summer. Their mission is to look at the relationship between a declining car industry and the cultural projects that have taken place in connection to this.
- The idea is to see what cultural alternatives there are to the car industry, which has been declining since the 1970s in Detroit. Today the city is in many ways a ghost town with empty locales. San Bernando was hit hard by the financial crisis in 2009. The situation in the city is still vulnerable, but at the same time the cultural sector is thriving, says Ivar Huntington to GP.
In total, five teams consisting of two students each will be sent abroad this summer. The winning teams will have four to six weeks at two different destinations to do their projects. During their travels they will report back home through social media, blogs and video clips. A final presentation of the projects will take place during the West Sweden Chamber of Commerce and Industry's 350 years celebrations this autumn.
- We want to see how far we can go here in West Sweden. We want to look into the future and give students the possibility to travel out in the world and bring home ideas to our region, says Robert Odenjung, head of communications at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, to GP.
