The panel: Must-dos in Gothenburg

Ben Kendall 2010-05-29

Göteborg Daily's panelists offer their advice on the must sees and dos for visitors and newcomers to Gothenburg.

I recommend visitors to Gothenburg to first take a stroll around Brunnsparken, Kungsportsplatsen and up to Avenyn. When the weather is good, these areas are very nice with several historical monuments. The canal boats Paddan take visitors on a small tour through the canals in the city centre. And taking a ferry out to the archipelago is an absolute must see. The Delsjön area is also a very nice park by the lake Delsjön. The nature out there is beautiful and there are many activities such as canoeing, swimming, and golfing.

In summer, it's really worth the trip out to the islands. They're a little barren and rocky, but certainly they've got their own charm and the time on the water is lovely. Otherwise just head for a stroll down from the Saluhallen at Kungstorget across to Haga through the park along the canal, up past Masthugget and the Masthuggskyrkan to Majorna, then back to Linnégatan through Slottsskogen. It's a pretty solid walk, but a nice one, and it gives you a pretty good look in, around and over the town.

If it's raining (and it could well be), Göteborgs Konstmuseum on the Aveny is definitely worth a look. Also, the History museum is an interesting couple of hours.

Cristina
Saluhallen and Fiskekyrkan are two must sees for me, as is doing the walk along the water from Sannegårdshamnen to Eriksberg and the walk through Haga. Take a ride on the ferry Älvsnabben. This gives you a chance to see Gothenburg from the water and get a feel for the city's history as a ship-building centre.

Carlos
A must see is the southern archipelago - it's the best thing about summer in Gothenburg. Then of course there is Slottsskogen and the 700-year-old fortress Bohus Fästning in Kungälv. This summer the new Ferris wheel down by the Gothenburg Opera could be worth checking out as well.

Karen
Wow. I think a trip to the Stadsmuseet is in order to understand what the City is about. Of course a stroll around town, Paddan is I suppose mandatory. The Harbour is of interest. I find most of the other museums here a bit sub-standard on an international level-I hate to say- although there are shining spots in each of them. I'm not an amusement park fan, and find it sad that one of the primary attractions in this City is Liseberg. While attractive for a quick walk, I find it sad to be a primary draw. And I suppose there will be any number that must go on the new Ferris wheel this year - Göteborg'sEye-ette as I call it. The parks are lovely - but then again, there are parks everywhere... Haga for that experience shows G'borgs uniqueness as well as a trip and lunch to Fiskekyrkan.

But, IMHO, the best and most unique part about Goteborg is it's archipelago.
