Underwater kite makes Time Magazine's top 50

Ben Kendall 2010-11-25

Gothenburg company Minesto has made Time Magazine's "50 best inventions of 2010" list with their Deep Green technology - an underwater kite.

Minesto's underwater kite, which is tethered to the ocean floor, swoops and dives in the ocean currents. It has a small turbine attached, which can generate 500 kilowatts of power even in calm waters.

The first scale model will be unveiled next year off the coast of Northern Ireland. The company believes the technology could increase the market for tidal power by 80 percent.
