The municipality of Gothenburg was to be the first in the country to offer free assault alarms to women who have been subjected to violence. The initiative started three years ago. But so far, not one single alarm has been handed out, reports Göteborgs-Posten.
The reason, according to municipality officials, is that the city districts have shown no interest in taking responsibility for the pilot project. The report states:
"No district administrations or district committees have said they are ready to take on the responsibility to be in charge of the pilot project."
The project will be brought to the table of the municipality board again this week. The initiative-taker, Helene Odenljung (the Liberals), will demand that the municipality officials make another attempt to convince the city districts to take on the project.
"The delegate body has decided that this should be tried and it is not good enough to just say that no-one wanted to do it," she tells Göteborgs-Posten.
Most city districts gave positive comments to the project when it was new. However, for example the police were skeptical as they feared the alarms would provide a false sense of security.
