The fire was still burning in the roof of the student apartment building in Guldheden on Sunday evening. The extinguishing work was expected to continue all night. The smoke could be smelled several kilometres from the building. Many students now have nowhere to live.
The building, called Blåelden, on Doktor Wigarts gata is much more damaged than what was first thought. Electricity, water and heating are not working and water has spread through the building via stove fans and ventilation.
SDN and Chalmers studentbostäder are temporarily operating from a nursing home opposite the building. Around 20 of those who lived in the building's 84 apartments gathered there on Sunday evening. Many haven't even been able to get inside and get necessities.
However, it seems like temporary housing can be organised through the municipality and other student apartment buildings.
"It's difficult, but for me at least it comes down to things that can be replaced," said a student to Göteborgs-Posten. He lived close to the apartment where one person was found dead on Saturday. On Sunday evening he did not know where to go.
It is not known how long it will take before people can move back into the apartments.
The police do not want to confirm if the dead person who was found inside a burnt-out apartment is the person who is registered at the address.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
