Gothenburg continues to strengthen its position as a destination for business and leisure travellers. Tourism increased for the 20th consecutive year with overnight stays up 3.8 percent in 2011, according to Göteborg & Co.
"Gothenburg is unique in Europe, no other destination that we know of has uninterrupted growth over this long period," says Sabine Sondergaard, CEO at Göteborg & Co in a statement.
She believes that the challenge is to cope with constant change:
"The world transforms all the time and competition increases."
"This requires that the city and business community together develop the brand and continue to invest in the tourism industry."
One requirement for continued growth is that the region's hotel capacity increases. The Clarion Hotel Post, which has 500 rooms, opened on January 26. Next year the Radisson's new hotel in Lindholmen with 250 rooms will open and in 2014/15 the third Gothia Tower will be ready with an additional 500 rooms.
