House of Win-Win, October 5. Emrik Larsson is a man of many talents. A master skateboarder, film expert, Opera/Jazz/Blues singer, actor, dancer and former lead singer in Stonefunkers who in the 80's and 90's were seen as Sweden's best live band. Tonight I get the pleasure of meeting his latest alter ego - Mrock.
The band takes the stage in a bizarre assortment of clothing. One of the guitarists is wearing a bathrobe whilst the other is dressed in a Jesus-smock and has "the best moustache in Västra Götaland." Mrock himself takes to the stage in buttoned down shirt, pearls, silk scarf and P-Funk shades. He looks for all the world like the bastard son of Tom Jones and Arthur Brown.
Tonight is the album release gig for Mrock's new album "Airborne" and we're treated to a fine mix of funk and soul from the album. One of the songs manages to mix "Highway to Hell" "Dance to the music" and "Start me up" into a funk brew that gets the gang behind me clapping and singing along (although they were clearly making up their own version). Mrock is a natural stage performer and despite the small sound system the music is great and the crowd are grooving away despite being all seated.
The gig takes place at the beginning of "Doc Lounge" which is also one of Emrik's creations. This is a regular meeting of film enthusiasts who watch and discuss films and documentaries that you would never find at the local multiplex. A fine idea by a multi-talented individual. I heartily recommend that anyone with an interest in good music and film check out the next event.
