Fika? Coffee? Where should I go?

Linda Genborg 2010-06-05

Gothenburg has a thriving café culture - there are cafés everywhere. The Göteborg Daily panel offer their best tips on Gothenburg's fika and coffee hotspots.

The cafe at NK and SOHO- sooo central and sooo convenient. There is a great italian coffee guy off the side of NK that I love- I can not recall the name-but real Italian coffee. Frankly- a lot of the Gothenburg coffee has that certain thing about it (like Starbucks) that makes me sick to my stomach with the aroma. Hate to say it- but coffee 24/7 -ick!!

I do love a really great espresso; Göteborg luckily has quite a few spots where you can find a truly tasty brew. Try Bar Italia on Prinsgatan for a full-on Italian experience. The crew there pride themselves on knowing their stuff and it's cheap, too, at 10 kr for a single shot.

I also like Da Matteo, just round from Grönsakstorget tram stop on Vallgatan. Their baristas have actually won prizes, I'm told. They import, mix, roast and packet their own beans, which is fairly unique in this town. If you're really interested, you could even check out their coffee tasting sessions every few months. On top of all that, they have a great outdoor area for a sunny day and pretty good pizza.

Finally, Zenit in Majorna is nice. They've got a pretty good range of coffees and teas, the food's tasty and best of all they have that big outdoor area across the road. Pretty unbeatable on a warm Spring day.

I don't really have a favourite café, but I usually head to Linnégatan or Haga. Good for people watching, especially on a nice day. Otherwise the café near the duckpond in Slottsskogen is very nice if you get a spot next to the water.

I drink lots of coffee, but where I buy it is not so important...

Cristina
I love Café Italia on the water promenade in Eriksberg. They make very good coffee, and incredibly tasty Italian pastries. The café itself is light and good-looking, and the staff are really friendly. When the weather is nice you can sit outside in the sun and watch the boats and ferries go by on the water. Or buy a take-away coffee and find your own spot somewhere on the wharf.

My favourite place to fika is the cafe Biscuit at Vasaplatsen 1. It's a small café located right in the beginning of Haga and it serves a great variety of different exotic sweets and dishes. There you can also sit outside when the weather is good and enjoy a salad with a mixture of walnuts, pears and shrimps.
