Several youth associations of the political parties in Gothenburg want to keep the 05:00 closing time for the city's night clubs. Representatives for the parties tell GP that they think the proposed 03:00 am closing time could harm Gothenburg as an event city.
Following a report on the connection between violence, alcohol and late service times, as well as complaints from the police, it is proposed that alcohol service in Gothenburg should end at 3:00 am. The new service times are expected to be introduced next year.
The proposal is supported by the Social Democrats, the Christian Democrats, the Greens and the Left Party in Gothenburg. But several youth associations are now taking up the fight to keep the opening hours as they are.
SSU, the youth association of the Social Democrats, said in GP on Monday that they are against the proposal. Several other youth associations have now joined their protest. MUF (Moderats), LUF (Liberals) and KDU (Christian Democrats) tell GP they think it is obvious that a city of Gothenburg's size should have night clubs that are allowed to serve alcohol until 5:00.
- Gothenburg should be a leading event city and I find it difficult to see the positive effects. If everyone is let out at the same time from the night clubs there will be chaos on Avenyn, says Christopher Solum, vice chairman for LUF, to GP.
- If there is lots of drunkenness and unrest in the city as the police say, it is important to work with preventative measures. To change the night clubs' service hours is not the right way to attack the problem, says Alexander Lagerman from KDU to GP.
Green Youth supports the proposal. Emma Tallborn says to GP that it is a difficult question but that the problems with violence and drinking are too significant.
- We support the proposal. Many of our members are restrictive when it comes to alcohol.
Ung Vänster (Left Party) and SDU (Sweden Democrats) are yet to take a standpoint.
